Weatherford’s swellable elastomer technologies feature our unique hybrid swelling elastomers, which are capable of swelling in water, oil or a mixture of both to isolate microannular voids or discrete reservoir intervals in oil, gas and injection wells. Our swellable elastomers are engineered so that swelling occurs predictably and only in response to specific well conditions, well fluids and temperature conditions. This flexibility greatly enhances planning and performance.
We have combined our unique, swellable elastomer with our industry-leading packers, centralization technology and sand screens. We have engineered our swellable technologies with specific wellbore challenges in mind:
Well construction
Openhole completions
Sand control
Swellable elastomers have numerous advantages including:
- Capability to flow and seal into almost any borehole geometry without the need for mechanical movement
- Requires no specialized knowledge or tools
- Reduces well complexity and well construction costs
- Reliable isolation for the life of the well

Precision and reliability are ensured at the planning stage by Weatherford’s proprietary SwellPro® portable swell-testing laboratory. Testing of well fluids and elastomer packer seals provides the essential preinstallation planning data that ensure an optimal design. The tests qualify elastomer criteria, including fluid compatibility, life expectancy, bond strength, swell ratio, and elongation and shear properties.
