Expandable Sand Screens
In weak, unconsolidated formations, unsupported barefoot completions usually aren’t an option. An expandable sand screen (ESS) is a compliant sand-control solution for nonuniform, high-fines environments. While expanding compliantly against the wellbore to eliminate annular space and provide borehole support, ESS technology filters all but the smallest sand grains.
The ESS offers a surface filter alternative to traditional gravel-pack completions and has distinct advantages in terms of open area, completion inner diameter (ID), and lower frictional pressure losses.
The Weatherford modular ESS system expands and conforms to the borehole wall to expose a large filter surface area.
Together with the large ID of the completion, the modular ESS system helps reduce frictional pressure losses, which promotes a more uniform inflow profile and enhances productivity. This simplifies reservoir management by improving sweep efficiency and increasing the time to water or gas breakthrough at the heel of the well.

ESS systems are unique for their ability to conform to open holes, stabilize formations, reduce the completion-skin effect, and minimize friction-induced pressure losses.
Our EXT hanger, complete with the integral OptisetTM fluid-loss valve (FLV), enables single-trip deployment of the expandable reservoir completion (ERC) system while offering unidirectional fluid loss prevention during the installation and completion phases.
Our ERC system, which consists of an EXT hanger, Optiset FLV, and 7-in. expandable sand screens, enabled a customer to complete seven remote deepwater wells, each in a single trip.
The operator selected the ERC system for its high productivity and ease of installation.
