Drilling Hazard Mitigation

Application Answers: MetalSkin® Open-Hole Liner System and MetalSkin® Monobore Open-Hole Clad System

Challenge: Drilling hazards and trouble zones can jeopardize well objectives, adding costs and operational risks while making it difficult to reach total depth (TD) with the optimal hole size. Concerns include wellbore instability, lost-circulation zones, overpressured formations and shallow flows. These conditions can generate nonproductive time, affect overall well economics, and lead to kick/loss well-control situations that can compromise the entire operation.

Weatherford’s MetalSkin open-hole liner and monobore open-hole clad systems address this challenge.

Answer: MetalSkin Open-Hole Liner System

Weatherford’s MetalSkin open-hole liner system offers a practical alternative to conventional techniques for fighting drilling hazards and trouble zones. This drilling liner is run in the hole, expanded in situ, and tied back to the previous casing string to place a mechanical barrier between the operator and the problem with minimal loss of hole size.

The MetalSkin solid expandable open-hole liner system minimizes slimming of the well profile while creating a high-integrity mechanical barrier to isolate drilling hazards.

Answer: MetalSkin® Monobore Open-Hole Clad System

Weatherford's MetalSkin monobore open-hole clad system—a contingency drilling liner—runs in hole and expands in situ. The system selectively isolates trouble zones as they are encountered, allowing drilling to continue without any sacrifice of hole size.

Once the monobore clad expands to seal the zone, another clad can be passed through the first one to treat additional problem zones deeper in the well. When TD of the hole section is reached, the previously planned casing program is installed through the clads. As a result, the MetalSkin open-hole clad system can mitigate drilling hazards faster, more cost effectively, and with greater certainty and less risk than conventional methods.

The MetalSkin monobore open-hole clad system isolates trouble zones quickly and cost efficiently with no loss of hole size.
