Weatherford Completes New World Record With Expandable Sand Screen (ESS(TM)) Technology

HOUSTON, Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Weatherford International, Inc.'s (NYSE: WFT) Completion Systems Division announced that a new world record Expandable Sand Screen (ESS) run was performed on Shell U.K. Exploration and Production's Brigantine-A offshore gas well at 15,843 feet with 7,200 feet of 6-inch horizontal reservoir section on Jan. 9, 2001.

In total, 7,000 feet of 4-inch ESS was deployed into the well. Of this 4-inch ESS, 4,920 feet was successfully expanded into the 6-inch horizontal reservoir hole section. Full expansion to contact the 6-inch borehole was achieved using a 4.75-inch solid fixed cone, followed by the Compliant Rotary Expansion System (CRES).

The initial cleanup production rates indicate performance improvement of over 20%, compared to plan and well cost savings in excess of 2 million pounds.
