This one-day intensive program introduces participants to the fundamental concepts and operational aspects of MPD systems, enabling them to understand how these advanced drilling methodologies help overcome challenges in complex drilling environments.
Certification
- IADC-accredited MPD Introductory Level certification
- Certificate valid for 5 years from date of issue
- Recognition by major operators and drilling contractors worldwide
Assessment
A multiple-choice examination covering key concepts (75% passing score required).
Delivery Method
Classroom and e-learning
Duration
1 day (8 hours)
Language
English
Objectives
- Define MPD and differentiate it from conventional drilling methods.
- Identify the main components of an MPD system and explain their functions including hands-on equipment identification.
- Understand the basic principles of wellbore pressure management.
- Recognize scenarios where MPD techniques provide operational advantages.
- Explain common MPD variations, including constant bottomhole pressure, pressurized mud cap drilling, and dual-gradient drilling.
- Identify key safety considerations and protocols specific to MPD operations.
- Interpret basic MPD-related documentation and communications.
- Understand operational procedures and best practices as well as safety considerations and risk management.
- Review case studies showcasing successful MPD implementation.
Target Audience
The target audience for the IADC MPD Introductory Level course is any rig personnel who are exposed to any MPD operations, as per IADC guidelines recommendations.
This includes support roles and non-decision-making positions who still need awareness of how MPD works, such as: floorhands, roustabouts, derrickmen, trainees, safety officers, HSE personnel, and logistics or support staff on MPD- equipped rigs.
No prior experience with MPD is required, though basic knowledge of drilling operations is beneficial.
