IADC MPD Supervisor Level

Purpose

The IADC MPD Supervisor Level course addresses more advanced managed pressure drilling (MPD) topics such as influx management and pressure management. It builds upon the surface backpressure MPD, variants of MPD, MPD problems and complications, and pressurized mud cap drilling (PMCD) content of the Operations course. Successful completion of the MPD-approved Operations course is recommended for personnel before taking the Supervisor course.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the course and IADC exam, participant will receive an IADC certificate valid for 3 years.

Assessment

IADC Managed Pressure Drilling knowledge assessment is required to pass course.

Objectives

  • Define and explain the similarities and differences between conventional drilling, MPD, and underbalanced drilling (UBD).
  • Explain the different concepts related to pressure management in relation to MPD variants: dynamic and static MPD, choke control, bottomhole pressure (BHP), surface backpressure (SBP), and anchor points.
  • Identify conditions that influence the type of MPD technique selected for a specific well.
  • Explain influx management and well kill procedures in relation to MPD systems and operating standards.
  • Explain how MPD can be used to detect and react to problems and complications such as losses, ballooning, wellbore stability, high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) issues, and stuck pipe.
  • Describe MPD procedures during day-to-day drilling operations such as tripping, cementing, pore-pressure tests, connections, and SBP MPD equipment and rig-up.
  • Identify main contingency procedures for complication such as plugged choke, loss of power, rotating control device (RCD) seal leak, non-return valve (NRV) failure, emergency shut-in, loss of control systems.
  • Discuss and describe PMCD and surrounding operations such as reservoir concepts, fundamentals of PMCD, mud system injection, and equipment overview.
  • Understand project management, health, safety, environment (HSE) issues, and regulations.

Target Audience

IADC recommmends this course for equipment operators who are primarily responsible for the MPD operational processes. Examples of these positions or job roles are assistant driller, toolpusher, rig superintendent/offshore installation manager (OIM), operator supervisor, onsite drilling consultant, drilling engineer, mpd engineer, mud logger, and mud engineer.
