Magnus® Saker RSS

Delivers 1,663‑ft in 346 Operating Hours in Harsh, Deep Drilling Environment While Maintaining Directional Control

Objectives

  • Drill a 12 1/4-in. long section and maintain inclination through salt and anhydrite formations.
  • Hold a challenging directional profile across multiple anhydrite layers.
  • Deliver a high-quality borehole with minimal tortuosity.

Our Approach

  • Weatherford experts selected the Magnus Saker RSS, 9 1/2-in. tool size, to maintain directional control and withstand high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) conditions in a long 12 1/4-in. section, ensuring compatibility with the well design and formation challenges.
  • Offset well analysis highlighted challenges such as fluid losses, wellbore stability, vibration, high mud weight, and inclination drop when transitioning from salt to anhydrite.
  • Performed hydraulic analysis to optimize the Saker RSS steering performance over the extended section, ensuring consistent control and efficient power delivery.
  • Monitored drilling parameters and equivalent circulating density (ECD) values in real time to maintain well integrity and manage torque-and-drag throughout the run.
  • Collaborated closely with the customer through planning, execution, and evaluation stages to align on objectives and mitigate risks.

Value to Customer

  • Achieved the longest continuous run in this field, drilling 1,663 ft (506 m) in one section with 259.81 circulating hours, reducing rig time, eliminating an extra trip, and lowering overall well cost.
  • Maintained precise directional control across salt and anhydrite layers, holding the J-shaped profile at 64° inclination, ensuring the well met the planned trajectory without corrective sidetracks.
  • Delivered a smooth, high-quality borehole with minimal tortuosity, simplifying casing operations, reducing drag, and improving cementing efficiency for long-term well integrity.
  • Enabled successful 10 3/4-in. casing run to TD on the first attempt, avoiding costly delays and mitigating risk in complex conditions.
