Compact Drop-Off System

Secures High-Quality Wireline Data Under Challenging Conditions, Saves $800,000 USD in Rig Costs

Objectives

  • Obtain openhole triple-combo wireline data using the Compact drop-off tool. The well was under a total loss and hole conditions were not favorable for conventional wireline logging. The operator needed the data recorded before running casing. Depending on the outcome of the logging run, the operator had a cementing unit on stand-by to plug the losses and carry out a sidetrack operation.

Our Approach

  • After close collaborations between the operator and Weatherford engineers, they opted to deploy the Compact drop-off (CDO) tool. The CDO system conveys wireline tools without exposing them to the borehole until logging starts, which reduces any bridging or sticking events. In addition, the system enables pulling the logging tools from the bottomhole assembly at any time.
  • The well was logged under a complete-loss condition, recording logs required by operator. The logging was done in memory mode to reduce any complexity introduced by the presence of the wireline cable in a challenging well condition.
  • After the logging was completed, the tools were retrieved and the data shared with the operator, enabling the rig to continue the wiper trip for the casing run.

Value to Customer

  • The use of the Compact drop-off tool to facilitate logging secured high-quality data under challenging conditions and empowered the operator to avoid time and costs of sidetracking the well.
  • More than 12 hours of rig time were saved by avoiding pulling out of the hole for data retrieval.
  • While logging, the pipe became momentarily stuck but was able to be released by circulation and pull.
  • By eliminating the cost of a sidetrack operation—including drilling, cement plug, oil-based mud, and the rig cost for six days—the operator saved approximately $828,000 USD.
  • The early and safe delivery of the well enabled additional operations.
