Performs with 100% Success Rate in Greaseless Wireline Campaign

Objectives

  • A customer in North America Land was using greaseless wireline to enhance and optimize their pump down plug and pert operations. Since they were running full strength in cable head, it would not be possible to break the mechanical weak point in the event of a stuck tool. As standard operating procedure (SOP), a release tool was to be run below the cable head and the CCL.

Our Approach

  • To achieve maximum efficiency, the operator utilized the Weatherford SPITFire release tool. The SPITFire tool is a ballistic release technology that provides a reliable option for detaching from the stuck tool string on command.
  • The SPITFire tool uniquely uses a frangible joint at the heart of the tool which allows for extreme robustness and operational reliability. To disconnect, a specific code is sent from the surface to an addressable switch in the tool which then initiates a detonator and booster combination to provide the power to sever the frangible joint. Following separation, the upper portion of the tool is free to be extricated with the cable and rope socket. The lower portion of the tool is parted leaving a standard fishing neck. Both external and internal profiles provide clean access to the stuck tool string for subsequent fishing runs.

Value to Customer

  • During the customer campaign, 9 successful releases with 100% success allowed for efficient and clean retrieval of the tool string using a conventional fishing overshot.
