Firma Abandonment Solution

Saves Operator $6.7 Million on Hurricane-Damaged Platform

Objectives

  • ·Complete intervention and plug-and-abandonment operations on 10 live, producing wells on a hurricane-damaged platform that was listing approximately 15˚ in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM).

Our Approach

  • As part of a Firma abandonment solution, Weatherford developed a compact, portable, and modular pulling-and-jacking unit equipped with an innovative, self-clamping skidding system that enabled the operator to easily transfer the unit from one well to another.
  • The pulling-and-jacking unit, capable of 100,000 lbf (45,359 kgf) pulling force and 500,000 lb-ft (226,796 kg-m) jacking force, was placed on a wedge deck to gain full access to the wells and served as the foundation for all operations.
  • The operator recovered approximately 32,000 ft (9,753 m) of various sizes of tubing and casing.
  • Weatherford equipment and personnel stayed on location 299 days and accrued 49,476 hr of operation without any recordable injuries or environmental incidents.

Value to Customer

The Weatherford Firma abandonment solution:

  • prevented the operator from incurring any drilling-rig operational costs;
  • alleviated the operator from using its own resources to develop an alternative method to address the damaged platform;
  • enabled the operator to continue working in high-wind conditions, where cranes are typically shut down, significantly reducing potential nonproductive time;
  • enabled the operator to complete the work 2 months ahead of schedule and save approximately US $6.7 million in operating costs.
