Enlarged 12 14 x 17 12-in. Well Under a Dual-Bore Landing Ring in a Single Run
Objectives
Enlarge a pilot hole from 12-1/4 in. to 17-1/2 in. in a single run to enable 13 3/8-in. casing to pass through. The well had a dual-bore landing ring with an ID of 14.8 in. and a 17.5-in. bit could not pass through.
Our Approach
Weatherford was approached by another oilfield service company to compare the RipTide drilling reamer with another reamer. The Weatherford team recommended the 12000 Series RipTide reamer as the optimal technology to perform the hole enlargement.
RipTide reamers improve drilling efficiency, minimize nonproductive time, and reach TD in the most challenging environments, often enlarging holes up to 30% beyond bit diameter.
The functionality and technical capabilities were key to the operator selecting the RipTide reamer. Additional features included the mechanical ball drop activation option (since the job was in shallow water).
Weatherford also featured the OneSync drilling optimization software platform. Due to the soft formation and to avoid a high jetting impact at the formation, the RipTide nozzles were blanked.
Field personnel ran the RipTide bottomhole assembly into the wellbore and enlarged a section from 731 ft (223 m) to 1,292 ft (394 m).
The tool was activated at the surface and the weight-on-bit was low (0 to 1 klb). The team experienced no issues during the entire underreaming operation.
At the surface, the RipTide reamer was tested open again and showed to be fully open.
The subsequent casing run was flawless.
Value to Customer
The Weatherford solution using RipTide borehole technology successfully completed the 12-1/4 in. to 17-1/2 in. enlargement in one run, below the dual bore landing ring.
The reamer successfully enlarged the wellbore to an opening ratio of 42%
Activation at surface allows positioning the ball drop reamer behind the bit to eliminate the rathole and the MWD tools above the reamer.
The operator subsequently ran and successfully set the 13 3/8-in. casing.
